Conservation Wood Duck House Unassembled Kit - Construct a lasting habitat and fantastic nesting site for waterfowl with this Conservation Unassembled Wood Duck House. This package of pre-cut, specifically sized panels and necessary hardware assembles together readily, creating a fantastic nest box for wood ducks and other small ducks. These amazing birds often prefer to nest in cavities, but are unable to excavate their own, relying on old or abandoned woodpecker nests to meet their needs. As such, they often will use manmade shelters, and this significant, pine unit provides a wealth of roosting room. The front panel sports a 4" wide and 3" tall, oval opening to best attract wood ducks, and sits near the top of this board to deter predation. A vinyl coated grid sits on the inside of this piece, acting as a ladder for nestlings to reach the exit when ready, enhanced by the rough hewn pine. A generous overhang on the sloped roof keeps water from entering the chamber, and a gap in each base corner provides drainage for any captured precipitation. These robust, 0.75” thick pine boards wonderfully insulate the nesting area, while gaps along the top of the home ensure it remains nicely ventilated. One side panel is divided with dual latched sections; the larger, top piece swings upward for nest checks, while the smaller, lower piece allows for cleaning of the nesting area. Predrilled holes, included hardware, and easy to follow instructions make this domicile simple to assemble, and a preinstalled hanger on the back aids in placing the unit against a wall, post, or tree easily. The included bag of wood chips helps waterfowl create a cozy nest and keeps the eggs in place, and the pine body remains durable for seasons of service, aging to a lovely gray tone over time. The kit makes a great family building project, and the thoughtful design makes completing the shelter simple. Hooded Mergansers are the only merganser that breeds and winters exclusively in North America. In the past, they were found throughout the continent, including mountainous areas, wherever suitable habitats existed. Today, they are most common in the Great Lakes region and eastern Canada but are also found in the Pacific Northwest. The habitat preferences of Hooded Mergansers are very similar to those of Wood Ducks. They like quiet, shallow, clear-water pools that have sandy or cobblestoned bottoms. They prefer ponds that are near or surrounded by deciduous woods: river bottomlands, small forest pools, millponds, swamps and beaver ponds. Unlike Wood Ducks, Hooded Mergansers have a difficult time finding food in turbulent water, so calm, clear water is highest on their list of habitat requirements. Hooded Mergansers are not likely to nest on large lakes.

There are several varieties of ducks that will nest in trees. One size house has different size entrance holes to accommodate each variety. This Wood Duck house has a wire ladder to help ducklings climb out. A lower side guard protects the nest when the side is open for observation. The entire side opens for cleaning. Comes with wood chips for nesting material. Due to size this nest box ships partially unassembled with easy to follow instructions. Some assembly required.
