Feeding Hummingbirds by Hand
Be calm, still and patient!
Attract hummingbirds to your yard by offering multiple sugar-water feeders.
It has been our experience that hummingbirds prefer feeders with attached perches. By learning to perch in comfort while eating may also put them at ease learning to perch on your hand.
As the Hummingbirds gather and increase in numbers find a comfortable spot to sit near the feeders.
Sitting at a small table or in a chair with arms will offer you support for your hand. You might also consider propping it up higher on an inverted flower pot or other object. Initial training of your birds can take time and your comfort is important in reassuring your birds. If your birds already associate you as the 'food person'; you are ahead in the process.
Sit still and quietly so the hummingbirds get used to you being there.
After they seem comfortable with you remove the feeders and put on some Hummerings. Some red nail polish and red yarn on your wrist may help.
With time and patience they should eventually start feeding from the ring(s) on your hands.
