Description
Artistic and functional weather instruments inspired by Thomas Jefferson!
Accurate, durable and beautiful, the Jeffersonian Thermometer is a treasured gift for any occasion!
Thomas Jefferson was an avid gardener, a follower of meteorological trends and a contributor to scientific understanding. He surrounded himself with devices designed to enlighten his understanding of the natural world - some of which he designed himself.
Had Thomas Jefferson designed weather instruments, they would have been attractive, long-lasting tools designed to reflect a gardener's reverence for the sun, the wind and the rain.
The Jeffersonian Rain Gauge uses a mechanical float and lever design to measure up to 5 inches of rain in 1/5 inch increments. This gauge will turn into the wind to ensure an accurate measurement, or may be tightened down to fix its location. Each rain gauge includes two 14 inch brass rods plus a pressure treated wooden stake for a total length of 42 inches, as well as a hanger bolt for optional installation on a post fence or deck rail. Total height with hanger bolt installation is 14 inches.
Like all Conant Thermometers, the Jeffersonian features solid brass construction.

All Conant Custom Brass Products Have A "Living Finish"
Like fine wine, solid brass and copper age gracefully and develop a mellow, antique patina over time. All Conant Custom Brass products have this "living finish," which enhances their genuine beauty for years to come. These products will never peel, flake or rust, even when used outdoors. They do not apply a protective coating to the surface of our outdoor products, simply because no clear coating lasts as long as the raw metal itself.
The photo here shows the transition of our classic Grande View Thermometer from a shiny, polished finish, to a warm antiqued finish, to a classic verdigris. Used outdoors, brass products naturally develop an antiqued finish after about two to three months' use. The verdigris finish develops anytime from 25 to 100 years' use — or as quickly as nine months if exposed to salt. The genuine beauty of a naturally aged patina appeals to those with a traditional aesthetic. Guaranteed for life!
