The BisonNest Story

Through the efforts of a few forward thinking ranchers and early conservationists, the few remaining bison were saved and they began a slow, but remarkable recovery. Unfortunately, the birds were still without one of their preferred and traditional nesting materials.

The good news is this isn’t the end of the story!

In a 2004 study of wild bird nests conducted by Bryan R. Coppedge at the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve, Osage County, Oklahoma, he observed that. “Bison hair was the most prominent zoological nesting material used” and “At least one nest of 13 bird species and 42% of all nests collected contained bison hair.”

In a follow-up 2007 study, Mr. Coppedge conducted an experiment on artificial nests by lining them with hair from bison. The results showed that nest predation was substantially higher on nests without bison hair when placed on the ground. Findings suggested the use of bison hair as a mask to control predation on birds.

Bison hair has valuable fiber characteristics that include softness, strength and heat retention. Now we can all participate in the return of the majestic bison.
